Architecture in the Netherlands has been surveying the state of architecture in our country every year for 35 years now. In addition to presenting a qualified selection of the most remarkable and leading buildings in the Netherlands, the editorial team, consisting of Teun van den Ende, Uri Gilad and Arna Mačkić, identifies trends, themes and developments in architecture

For this 35th edition of the yearbook, the editors note that a change of course is emerging in architectural practice, and decided to discuss this with architects, clients and critics, hence the theme of this edition: Time to talk! They asked them to shed their light on the most striking topics that emerged from an analysis of the many submitted projects. They discussed, for instance, the autonomy of the designer, which has come under pressure from the current emphasis on financial feasibility, or the need to meet social and environmental challenges.

Can the architect, whose influence is limited, still make a difference? A small number of exceptional projects, the editors note, prove that it is possible. What turns out to be necessary is exceptional craftsmanship, expertise, or simply persistence and persuasiveness, but not only that. Tackling today's complex issues, such as climate change and the housing crisis, requires a multitude of insights that go beyond those of architects, clients and builders alone. The architect must use the power of design to accommodate this multitude of insights and to convert this into strong buildings: spatial solutions that make the difference.
