Architecture Guide South: Plan South, Garden City Buitenveldert, the Zuidas

The Amsterdam South Architecture Guide: Plan South, Garden City Buitenveldert, the Zuidas Business District, presents three very special parts of the city on the South side of Amsterdam in outline and highlights. Plan Zuid, based on a 1915 urban design by H.P. Berlage, shows the characteristics of a monumentally designed part of town, with wide boulevards and baroque symmetry axes. Brick residential blocks form close-knit, closed street walls, executed in the at times astonishing Amsterdam School style.

Buitenveldert, built around 1960, is quite different, part of the famous General Expansion Plan (AUP) from 1934. This district is a wonderful example of a functionalist urban design, spacious, clear and straight-lined, with an open allotment of strips and brackets. The Zuidas has been rising in the border area between these urban development phenomena for several decades. This is a compact urban district in the making, with spectacular office towers and luxurious, brand-new residential buildings, designed by a selection of famous architects from the Netherlands and abroad.

He offers a concise introduction to the backgrounds and characteristics of the three urban areas.
